October is here, and to many people, that means one important thing — it’s Halloween season, and it’s time to get spooky. While Halloween isn’t known for its iconic music as much as Christmas is, it would be a lie and a crime to say that there’s none at all. As dance aficionados at Soaring Dance Theatre, we can think of a few Halloween song and dance combinations that we love.

Want to master a hauntingly entertaining dance this season? Here are some of the most iconic Halloween song and dance combos:

Michael Jackson’s Thriller

It would be unthinkable to leave Thriller out of a list of essential Halloween dances. For many, Thriller is the definitive spooky dance of the last century, and it’s likely it will retain that position for many years to come.

Michael Jackson was no slouch when it came to dancing. Who are we kidding — MJ was an absolute master of dance, and his title as “King of Pop” is entirely deserved. Everyone recognizes the Thriller dance to a certain degree, and we can confess that it’s just an absolute blast to learn this with a group and be able to perform it together.

The Pumpkin Dance

The pumpkin dance is one that’s not recognized en masse like Thriller is, but to anyone who’s familiar with popular jokes spawned from internet culture, the famous “Pumpkin Dance” has soared to meteoric status.

For the uninitiated, the pumpkin dance first came from a news broadcast on a local Nebraska news station, KXVO. The video featured a man wearing a pumpkin mask and a black unitard, performing a peculiar dance to the Ghostbusters theme song.

You can never quite predict when the internet will find something obscure, unknown, and completely random, and suddenly elevate it to viral popularity. But, as these things often go, this is exactly what happened, and for whatever reason, the pumpkin dance exploded, spawning countless recreations and remixes, rising to memetic fame. The Ghostbusters version is the original, but one version remixed to the song “Spooky Scary Skeletons” is a runner-up for popularity.

Time Warp

It would be hard to create a list of popular Halloween music without somehow referencing Rocky Horror Picture Show, and sure enough, one of its most popular songs, Time Warp, is a popular candidate for dancing. We include this on our list because it’s another one of those songs that you can readily find in video form if you want to attempt it to learn you on your own.
