Many parents ask us when they should start their child in piano lessons in our Monroe NY studio. Some teachers believe that children should start as young as 3 years old, and there are some studies that show starting lessons that young can be a benefit to their brain. However, this can simply be impractical. Most three year olds simply are not ready to sit still long enough to study the piano, and forcing them to do so can result in a lot of frustration and a lifelong resentment of the instrument.

Instead, we recommend starting children in lessons at the age of 5. Kids are usually able to handle sitting still for longer periods of time by this age, and their hands are big enough to work the keys properly. We start beginner lessons with our 5 year olds, and encourage them in a supportive, nurturing environment to study their music and get the most out of every piano lesson. Of course, you don’t have to be five to start piano lessons! We accept students from 5 through adult who are excited about learning to play the piano.

If you would like to sign your child up for lessons (or even sign yourself up!), visit our website and use the contact form to get in touch with us.
